In this paper students have the opportunity to progressively improve their proficiency in te reo Māori and their understanding and respect for Te Ao Māori. They will develop an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in teaching contexts in Aotearoa.

This whole year paper will be taught on campus via lectures and tutorials as well as off campus with a one day per week placement on Thursdays.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Demonstrate respect and awareness of te reo and tikanga Māori
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • Provide evidence of progressively developing te reo Māori proficiency for a selected education context including the use of vocabulary and sentence structures.
    Proficient speakers of te reo Māori will be assessed on their personal reo and tikanga development throughout the paper. Furthermore, Assignments 1 & 4 (and possibly Assignment 2, pending on the proficiency of reo for group members) can be submitted in te reo Māori.

  • Demonstrate understandings of the role of agency as a teacher in an Aotearoa education context..
